90th Anniversary Celebration and Block Party Spirits Not Dampened by Rain
It was a great time at the 90th Anniversary Celebration for the Historic Southwood Park Neighborhood Association!Despite the rain that closed in, about 150 neighbors came together to socialize on the Westover Road esplanade on August 20th. We enjoyed music from U & I. Folks sampled the tables of goodies from neighborhood vendors Pembroke Bakery, Chuck and Birds, and the Friendly Fox. Of course, it wouldn't be a summer picnic without hotdogs from the grill, too...There was a kids bicycle parade that included an adult "bike float" entry from the Friendly Fox. The face painting was a big hit. And the Chalk Walk was very popular while the street stayed dry enough for the artists. The adults enjoyed the neighborhood baking contest, won by Deb Beckman. I'm told we'll have a copy of the winning recipe to share soon...[slideshow]Many people stuck out the soft rain for quite a while and spirits weren't dampened at all. The kids really enjoyed the simple pleasure of playing in the summer rain! Sometimes, it's easy to forget what that was like...While the kids would have kept playing, we did pack up a little earlier than seven when there was a little rumble of thunder. You'll be happy to know that the unopened food will be donated to the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. This event was a big enough success to convince us to hold another Block Party next summer. We'll sing "Happy Birthday" for our grand old association when it turns 91!
