Association Wants Foster Park Plan Revisited
The Historic Southwood Park Board of Directors met last week. The Board discussed the Foster Park Golf Course redesign and unanimously adopted a letter asking the Board of Park Commissioners to pause the current plan and return to the public for more input and a redesign. This letter has been sent to the Parks Department, our City Council representatives and Mayor Henry.
The problem? In the excitement to upgrade the course for its centennial, the Parks Department hired golf course architects who designed a plan that - we feel - does not account for the other users of the Foster Park. The current plan greatly expands the course, taking space from the Foster Park trail, the woods, and open space that makes Foster Park a popular destination for more than golfers. The plan proposes changing from an open 20’ wide trail to one in the woods at about half the size.
We applaud the desire to upgrade the course. But we want Foster Park to retain its high quality trail, which is the most used portion of the park. We want the City to restudy the Foster Park Cultural Landscape Report and devise a better plan for the future.
