A Craftsman’s Makeover on Westover Road

At the intersection of Westover Road, Beaver and Pasadena Avenues, a handsome bungalow sits perched; an unbeatable west facing vista of the entire Westover Road boulevard and just beyond, the Old Mill Road roundabout. For the past many years steady improvements were made on 1115 Westover by a previous owner, then stopped when it sold for a year. In 2022, a tip shared by the current owners son, who also resides in Southwood Park, gave Craig and Joyce Amacker an opportunity to purchase their beloved bungalow. The home, seemingly vacant at the time, meant no one answered the door when Joyce knocked to inquire of its status. She decided to leave a card expressing interest in purchasing it on a stack of mail on the enclosed porch, unable to find a mailbox (which is in the rear!). She hoped to hear something as they returned to Florida. Six weeks later, a call from the listing agent who found her card wondered if they were still interested. They most definitely were and a month later purchased 1115 Westover Road moving in August of 2022. Previous to Florida living, Joyce and Craig owned a beautiful three-story brick Queen Anne in Historic West Central Neighborhood for fourteen years, wintering in Florida during that period then moving down year round but ultimately decided being back near family was preferable. Craig commented how great it was to see all ages of residents, especially young kids out riding their bikes and playing after being away from a multi-generation neighborhood.

The Amacker’s made quick work of refinishing and replacing wood floors, heavy cleaning, painting, recoating a fireplace floor surround, carefully repainting the entire enclosed front porch’s windows (a dozen with so many muttons!)  A spacious porch that now features cheerful rattan cushioned furniture, lamps, rugs and views that don’t stop, just ask their colorful aviary friend Kiwi and dog Petey! Joyce added her talented touches to the interior - curating a handsome collection of craftsman furniture, artwork, lamps and stained glass hung in lower windows for pattern and privacy. The ultimate installation, a period multi light ceiling fixture she salvaged from a home that was being demolished in Huntington (pictured). Their efforts moved outdoors last year, installing new beds that reach out to the curved walks of the “point” and back around the home showcasing the elevation with stacked stone terracing, new trees, perennials and flower-filled window boxes. The scale and depth of their gardens, an ideal companion to the bungalows deep-bracketed wood eaves.

Craig and Joyce’s hard work and vision are giving residents a beautiful view the entire neighborhood gets to enjoy. We thank you and welcome you to Historic Southwood Park! 🌳 🏡 🌲
