Attempted Burglaries Reported During Yuletide - Be Watchful

We associate prowlers with warm weather months, but criminals can be active any time of year.Crime doesn't take a vacation.  In fact, it often looks for trouble when we are away.  There were several reports of attempted burglaries in alleys between Indiana Avenue and Tacoma Avenue in the wee hours of Christmas morning.Neighbors heard strange noises and called 911.  Some suspects were caught, but others may have gotten away.  Here are some fresh Facebook comments from neighbors:

  • An attempted garage burglary in the 4400 block of Indiana Ave happened early this morning. Cops were called and a canine unit followed the scent over to the 900 block of Maxine where they were attempting another garage burglary. Two suspects were caught and taken into custody. Merry Christmas everyone!
  • My neighbor told me that he scared away a burglar next door to him at 4:30am Christmas morning on Indiana Ave; the homeowner is away for Christmas. Everyone keep your eyes on the lookout; especially garages,
since that's what the burglar broke into the other night.
  • On Christmas morning around 3;30 a.m. The police responded to a 911 call for possible burglary in progress in the alley between Maxine and Lexington along the 4200 blocks of Tacoma and Indiana. It sounded like a garage or home door was being forced open with a shoulder. They didn't see anyone in the alley. I have also heard that police later that morning did catch an assailant but another got away. We need to be very diligent about listening for unusual sounds at unusual times of night or morning.

Yes - we do need to be very diligent.

  • We need to make calls to 911 for anything suspicious.
  • We need to keep those porch lights on at night, even in the winter. Motion sensor lights are a great idea.
  • We need to keep garages, doors and vehicles LOCKED.
  • We need to use lights and timers when we are on vacation.
  • Have your mail and newspaper deliveries stopped when away.
  • Let a trusted neighbor know to keep an eye on your house when you're out of town.
