So, Do I Have an Ash Tree? And Is It Being Treated? (updated)
The Association completed its Ash tree treatments last month. This has prompted the reasonable question is my ash street tree being treated? If so, is it being treated by the Association or the City? This article will answer those questions. Before we list which trees are healthy enough to still be treated, let's assume you aren't aware why you should care about ash trees or what one even looks like. Several folks who asked why our volunteers were treating their street trees were unaware of the threat to ash trees. Many people were unaware they even had ash trees.
- You should care about ash trees because they represent a sizeable portion of our valuable tree canopy.
- Ashes were planted in great numbers in the wake of Dutch Elm disease, which killed many of the neighborhood's original street trees in the 1950s and 1960s.
- Now the ashes are being killed by the Emerald Ash Borer, introduced accidentally from Asia.
- All ashes infected by the borer will die if they are left untreated.
- Unsure if you have an ash? Look at this identification guide: http://www.emeraldashborer.info/files/E2942.pdf
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the following folks: Chad Tinkel, City Arborist, for treating as many of our ash trees as his budget allows and giving us the inventory of trees; Board Member and arborist Kasey Krouse who assessed the remaining trees for viability; Board Member Cheryl McCarthy who assisted during treatments; and Board VP and master gardener Pat Thomson who has pursued this issue, made the phone calls, assisted with assessment and did the vast majority of the treatments, hauling gallons of water for each tree the neighborhood took on. Thank you, all! With those thoughts explained, let's move on to the lists of street trees to be treated. Here are some things to bear in mind:
- These are street trees in the city's right of way only.
- If you have an ash in your yard proper, you'll need to have it treated yourself.
- Some of the addresses in the lists are approximate. As the city cataloged its ash inventory, they wrote down the address of the tree, not the house; if you live on a corner lot, double-check the listings for your side street!
- The list of City-treated Ash trees defines trees that were healthy enough to have been treated LAST YEAR (2010).
- The City is conducting its 2011 survey now. The list may get a bit shorter this year as a few of the City-treated trees are now showing visible signs of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) infestation.
- And, finally, if your ash street tree isn't listed in either of the following files, I'm sorry to say that it wasn't healthy enough to warrant treatment. Unfortunately, once the EAB has infested enough to cause a substantial portion of upper branches to die, i.e., not leaf out, there is no effective treatment.
As always, feel free to contact us with questions: Southwood_Park@yahoo.com.--- Steve McCordHere are the trees being treated by the City of Fort Wayne:Arlington Avenue: 4621, 4717, 4725, 4726, 4814Beaver Avenue: 4207, 4248, 4318, 4414, 4529* (2), 4601, 4607, 4712Crestwood Drive: 4633Indiana Avenue: 4101, 4314*, 4501*
And here are the trees being treated by Historic Southwood Park:
- Site is the east-to-west or north-to-south tree location on the property relative to other street trees on the property's park strip.
- DBH is the diameter of the Ash tree. It determined the amount of Xytect required to properly treat the tree.
- X12ml is the actual milliliter amount of treatment.
- Date is the date the tree was treated.
